Rebuilding trust and returning to education
K joined LRL near the end of Year 11 after approximately a year without meaningful engagement in education. He was restless, reluctant to complete work and significantly behind in English and mathematics.
K’s first sustained attempt to reconnect with education required more than an academic timetable. Staff prioritised trust, consistency and a programme connected to his ambitions.

K initially found it difficult to settle, remain focused or complete academic work. Staff used daily mentoring and ensured that two key adults developed a detailed understanding of his communication, triggers, interests and regulation needs.
A clear reward system was agreed with K. Staff delivered every commitment exactly as it had been presented. Following previous experiences of adults making promises that were not fulfilled, this consistency became a significant turning point in his relationship with the provision.
K received English and mathematics tuition, PSHE, mentoring, cooking, enrichment and careers guidance. Tasks were short and manageable, movement breaks were planned and staff linked learning to his interest in boxing and his future ambitions.
Attendance remained an area for continued improvement, but 64% represented his first sustained engagement with education for approximately a year. He was punctual when he attended and would sometimes choose to return to the centre following external appointments, even when he was not required to do so.
By the end of the placement, K was completing work, responding positively to staff, communicating when he needed support and regulating his emotions more effectively. He developed positive peer relationships and became a role model to younger learners.
There were no incidents involving aggression, damage, absconding or suspension throughout the placement.
K secured a college place, continued with boxing and was keen to maintain his relationship with LRL beyond the end of Year 11.
For K, re-engagement began when adults consistently did what they said they would do.
